Privacy

This is a personal travel journal. We keep what we collect to the minimum.

Analytics and cookies

We use Google Analytics to see which stories people read. How it behaves depends on where you are, which we read from your connection’s country (Cloudflare tells our server): in places where the law asks for consent first (the EU and EEA, the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, India, Malaysia and Indonesia), and whenever the country is unknown, it stores no cookies until you choose “That’s fine”, and until then sends only cookieless signals without identifiers. In the USA it is on by default and you can turn it off under “Your Privacy Choices”. Elsewhere it is on by default and you can turn it off under “Cookie settings”. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser is treated as “No”.

When it is allowed, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_*, kept for 13 months, to tell visits apart. Google receives the pages you view, your approximate location, device and browser. We do not use it for advertising, have switched off sharing the data with Google for its own purposes, and do not combine it with anything else. Your choice is stored in a cookie named cc_cookie. You can change it any time at the bottom of every page.

Search and the story filters run in your browser. What you type is not sent to us.

The contact form

When you write to us, your name, email address, the story you mention and your message are stored in a Google Sheet in our Google account, and we get an email about it. We use them only to reply, keep them no longer than we need to, and never add you to a mailing list or share them. The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to keep spam out; it checks your browser, not who you are.

Hosting

The site is served through Cloudflare from our own server. Like every web server, they keep short-lived technical logs (IP address, time, page requested) to keep the site running and secure.

Old comments

The comments from 2011 to 2014 are shown as they were left, with the name the commenter chose. Email addresses and websites are not published. If you left a comment and would like it removed, write to us.
